Getting ready for moving day

Whilst we know that getting ready for moving day is exciting, it can also be a stressful process making sure you have all of your ducks in a row. We've put together some helpful information below to help your prepare. You can also download our move-in checklist here that will help you keep on track.

Top Tips

  • Decluttering and itemising your belongings, along with starting preparations early (eight to twelve weeks in advance if possible), will simplify the moving process and reduce any move-week anxiety.

  • When selecting a removals company to help you move, bear in mind that a reliable removal business should have clear policies about permits and delays as well as sufficient insurance coverage for items in transit.

  • You can give yourself the best chance of a seamless transfer to your new home by packing effectively, carefully labelling boxes and updating your address with any necessary businesses well ahead of the move.

Undoubtedly, there'll be many people you'll need to contact to let them know you're moving. Not only gas, electricity, water and other service providers, but also your bank, dentist and doctor as well as friends and family.

You can save time by using websites set up specifically for this purpose, and which are free to use such as 'I am moving'

We've also created a handy 'moving home change of address checklist' to help you keep track of who you have contacted.

It's a good idea to redirect your mail for a few months after you've moved, just in case you've missed anyone. This can be done online through Royal Mail.

Get quotes from removal firms, confirming what's included in the price, such as packing boxes.

  • Register with the service providers at your new home
  • Book suitably qualified tradespeople to disconnect appliances at your old address and re-fit them at your new home if required
