Right to Buy FAQs

Right to Buy is a scheme that allows most council tenants, as well as some housing association tenants, to buy their home at a discount.

If your home used to be owned by the council, but they sold it to us while you were living in it, you may have the Right to Buy. This is called ‘Preserved Right to Buy’.

You may be able to purchase your rental home if;

  • You rent your home from Bromford and have a 'secure' tenancy - a tenancy given to you by Bromford before 15 January 1989 OR
  • You were a Council tenant when the management of your home was transferred to us from Cotswold District Council, Lichfield District Council, Tewkesbury Borough Council or South Gloucestershire Council AND
  • You don't live in sheltered or other housing specifically for elderly or disabled people AND
  • You don't have any outstanding possession orders against you because you have breached the terms of your tenancy agreement.

Discount will be set at regional variations and will depend on the location of your property. Find out more on the government website here

Any improvement that you want to be taken into consideration for your application must have been:

  • previously approved in writing by Bromford
  • paid for by you (proof will be required)
  • applied for and completed in the last 12 years

We will not consider improvements that are over 12 years old or that were not approved by Bromford.

All improvements must have increased the value of the property according to the official valuation at the time of your application to buy your home.

Not all improvements are considered to add value to the property. For example, redecoration or general maintenance.

Improvements that could be considered to have added value to the property include central heating, double glazing, a fitted kitchen, or a new bathroom suite.
