Plan ahead
Think about who’s coming and what they like to eat. A mixture of meat, vegetables and even plant-based options means there’s something for everybody. It’s also a good idea to prepare as much as you can the night before. Chopping salads, marinating meat or sorting out sides early can save stress on the day.

Safety first
Set your barbecue up in a clear open space away from fences, sheds or overhanging trees. Keep children and pets at a safe distance and always have water or sand close by, just in case. Never leave a hot grill unattended.

Keep it simple
You don’t need a huge menu. A few well-cooked burgers, chicken kebabs, sausages or veggie skewers with some salad, crisps, dips and bread rolls are more than enough. Focus on good food and good company.

Create a relaxed space
Make sure there’s enough seating and shade, especially if it’s a hot, sunny day. Blankets on the grass or camping chairs work well and can be moved around easily. Add a bit of atmosphere with some fairy lights and music to set the mood.

Be a good neighbour
Smoke and noise can carry, so you might want to let your neighbours know in advance that you are hosting and keep music at a reasonable level.
