Decorating your home and making it your own is one of the most exciting parts about purchasing a new property, and it doesn’t have to break the bank. Whilst we would always recommend leaving the decorating for the first year to allow your new home to settle, we hope that sharing these top tips we can help you build your dream aesthetic for your home within a budget that works for you.

Plan ahead  

One of the easiest ways to go over budget when it comes to decorating your home is by not planning ahead and buying more than you actually needed to. Take the time before starting the work to calculate exactly what you need and how much of it will get the job done, to avoid wasting money and products.

Feature wall  

A feature wall can make a big impact on a room with a relatively small amount of money and time, and there’s lots of ways to do it. Getting enough wallpaper or paint to cover one wall is relatively inexpensive, and so is putting all the artwork for the room in one place, or even displaying attractive items you already have such as decorative plates.

Think lighting  

Lighting a room the right way can help to achieve the desired atmosphere, and the way to do it is very simple. Most shops that sell light bulbs provide the option of warm, neutral or cool light. You can decide which style you like the best, but generally warm light is the popular choice for bedrooms as it’s inviting and relaxing, whereas cool light is typically chosen for kitchens and bathrooms as it’s more functional and modern.  

Rummage charity shops

A luxurious feel does not mean that every item must be brand-new. Be sure to keep charity shops in mind when hunting for furniture, as you can often find unique and well-painted pieces for a fraction of the typical high street price.  

Get crafty

Ornaments, vases and other purely decorative items are a place where big savings can be made with a bit of creativity. Think about how items you already have can be updated with small changes, such as painting it a new colour, or how non display items like used mason jars can be transformed into lovely decorations with the simple addition of lights or flowers. Think outside the box before buying trendy ornaments.
