Keeping your pets safe and cool this summer
As the summer months approach, it's important to make sure our pets stay safe, happy and healthy. Rising temperatures, whether indoors or outdoors, come with a few risks that pet owners need to be aware of. Here are some simple tips to help your pets enjoy the sunshine safely.
Top tips for enjoying the warmer months with your pets
Keep them cool
Pets can overheat quickly in hot weather, so make sure they always have access to fresh water and a shaded spot to rest. On very warm days, it’s best to walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. If the pavement feels too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Keep smaller pets out of direct sunlight and give them a cooler hideaway, out of the heat.
Never leave pets in cars
Even with the windows open, within just a few minutes, a parked car can become dangerously hot. Don’t leave your pet alone in a vehicle during warm weather. It’s safer to leave them at home if you’re going somewhere they can’t go with you.
Grooming matters
Giving your pet a regular brush helps remove excess fur and can keep your pet cooler. Some dog breeds may benefit from a summer trim, but it’s best to check with a groomer to find out what’s suitable for your pet.
Refreshing treats
A great way to help your pet stay cool is to offer chilled snacks. Dogs enjoy small pieces of frozen fruit, cats love to lick and play with ice-cubes in a bowl and rabbits and guinea pigs will nibble on cool cucumber and chilled leafy greens. Always check before introducing new treats or cooling methods, especially if your pet has health conditions, that it is right for them.
Taking precautions to make sure your pet is comfortable in the warmer months is a must, but you can still enjoy the season, spending quality time together. Whether it’s playing in the garden, a relaxing walk at the park or a road trip adventure, a little care and attention will keep your pet happy and healthy as you enjoy the sunshine.
