Moving home checklist

There is a great deal to do before you move into your new home. Here's a checklist to help you:

Three weeks to go

  • Get estimates from a removal firm and confirm in writing, or arrange van hire if you're doing your own removals
  • Check your home contents policy for cover at your new address during your move
  • Advise your bank/building society and credit card companies of your new address and amend any regular payments
  • Arrange for utility bills such as water, electricity, gas and phone accounts to be finalised
  • Book electrician/plumber to disconnect and refit appliances
  • Notify dentist, doctors to transfer records to new practices
  • Confirm school transfers
  • Start packing boxes and clearly label each one by room (if this is not being done by your removal company)
  • If required, confirm time off with your employer
  • Arrange for childcare and/or pet care while you are moving.

Two weeks to go

  • Dispose of unwanted items from cupboards, attics and sheds
  • Arrange a postal redirection order for your mail
  • Double check change of address for:
    • Bank/building society
    • Insurance companies
    • Premium bonds and savings certificates
    • Credit cards and store cards
    • Driving licences
    • Mortgage providers
    • Inland Revenue
    • Council offices
    • Social Security
    • Clubs and memberships
    • Milk and other direct delivery services
    • Relatives and friends.

One week to go

  • Confirm moving arrangements with removal/van hire company
  • Label items to be left behind and remove fixed items not included in the sale
  • Sort out keys into sets for your existing home
  • Put together a tool kit with screwdrivers, pliers, hooks, bulbs and son on that should be kept handy for moving day
  • Clear out attics/lofts, garden, sheds etc
  • Check solicitor has correct time and date for the move.

One day to go

  • Defrost fridge/freezer or switch to maximum cold setting  if taking them with you
  • Clean down surfaces, paintwork and sanitary ware
  • Clean carpets
  • Take down light shades if you are taking them with you
  • Take any fixtures not being left as part of the sale
  • Pack a box of essentials with kettle, mugs, scissors, sharp knife, refreshments, hand and tea towels and toilet rolls. Keep handy so it's the first box to be unpacked at your new home.

Moving day

  • Strip beds, pack bedding, night cloths etc
  • Take down curtains and remove rugs etc
  • Turn off central heating and all electrical appliances
  • Make a note of gas, electric and water meter readings
  • Check all storage spaces have been cleared and lock all windows and doors
  • Leave keys as arranged for the new owners
  • Call the sales consultant and check if monies have been received
  • Once received, meet with the consultant on site to have formal handover of the keys to your new home.
